Non \u00e8 una novit\u00e0 per chi mi segue. Tra i grandi maestri della narrativa gotica moderna considero fondamentale una \u201cmaestra\u201d, quella Daphne du Maurier<\/strong>, scrittrice a nostro sommesso parere ancora oggi quanto mai fraintesa. Mi pare giusto allora dedicarle un piccolo spazio nella mia rubrica.<\/p>\n

Nata nel 1907 a Londra e morta a Parigi all’et\u00e0 di 81 anni,<\/strong> Daphne visse gran parte della vita in Cornovaglia, terra magica che la influenz\u00f2 nella scrittura al punto tale che gi\u00f2 nel 1940 un suo romanzo l\u00ec ambientato e divenuto celeberrimo film diretto da Alfred Hitchcock<\/strong>, Rebecca la prima moglie<\/em>, le fece raggiungere fama planetaria. Per diversi anni la scrittrice fece di tutto per evitare i ricevimenti e la vita mondana cui l’avrebbero costretta e la condizione di scrittrice di successo. In realt\u00e0 lei amava in modo totale la solitudine e le coste selvagge della Cornovaglia;<\/strong> e a questa landa incantata, che prosegu\u00ec a ispirarla nel creare l\u2019affascinante atmosfera dei suoi romanzi, Daphne si volse per vivervi con la famiglia e i suoi amati cani West Highland Terrier<\/strong>, prima nell\u2019antica magione di Menabilly, poi a Kilmarth, un antico maniero non troppo lontano.<\/p>\n

A questa terra dedic\u00f2 il romanzo The House on the Strand<\/strong> (La casa sull’estuario), e la guida di viaggio Vanishing Cornwall<\/strong> (Cornovaglia magica).<\/p>\n

Nominata Dama dell\u2019Impero Britannico nel 1969,<\/strong> Daphne si rifiut\u00f2 di andare a Londra per la cerimonia d\u2019investitura: tanto pi\u00f9 aumentava la sua fama, tanto pi\u00f9 tendeva a isolarsi. Mor\u00ec a Parigi all’et\u00e0 di 81 anni.<\/strong> Le sue ceneri vennero sparse, assecondando i suoi desideri, nei campi che circondavano la sua ultima residenza.<\/p>\n

Ripercorriamo allora in ordine cronologico la sua opera, fitta di romanzi, racconti e qualche lavoro agiografico. Questa la lista dei romanzi:

Facendo affiorare il suo insopprimibile ego maschile, Daphne<\/strong> raccont\u00f2 molte delle sue storie immergendosi nei panni e nelle cellule di un uomo narrante, come, appunto, il Nat Hocken<\/strong> de Gli uccelli.<\/strong> In questo cambio d’identit\u00e0 risult\u00f2 sempre molto convincente e l’ambiguit\u00e0 sessuale sovente caratterizzer\u00e0 pi\u00f9 di un suo personaggio.
\nConsiderata, a torto, un\u2019autrice solo romantica, nella realt\u00e0 non lo fu per nulla; la sua vera dimensione era quella del gotico pi\u00f9 puro, oscillante fra misteri irrisolti, dimensioni paranormali, atmosfere sospese e incantate, sinistre aspettative apocalittiche, e un rifiuto quasi ideologico per la catartica happy end (si veda l’incredibile conclusione di Don’ Look Now<\/strong>, resa celeberrima dall’ottimo film di Nicolas Roeg<\/strong> A Venezia un dicembre rosso shocking<\/em>, in cui una nana assassina agghindata come Cappuccetto Rosso sgozza il protagonista, convinto per tutto il tempo di vedere il fantasma della figlioletta morta che si aggira per le calli oscure di una putrida Venezia…).<\/p>\n

Proprio Non guardare adesso,<\/strong> pubblicato per la prima volta in Italia nel 1972 (1), \u00e8 uno degli esempi pi\u00f9 alti della perfezione stilistica della scrittrice nell’arte del racconto breve. Costruito su una sorta di \u201cequivoco visivo\u201d da parte del protagonista maschile, ignaro di possedere una \u201cseconda vista\u201d in grado di captare il futuro, la du Maurier<\/strong> ci porta ferocemente per mano attraverso una serie di conseguenti e tragici \u201ceffetti farfalla\u201d, tutti scaturiti dal fatto che l’uomo ha creduto reale la sua visione: l’ultima conseguenza sar\u00e0 proprio la propria morte, e negli ultimi istanti di vita lui capir\u00e0 che quel che aveva visto \u2013 la moglie sul vaporetto, vestita a lutto e con aria afflitta \u2013 era la sconvolgente sintesi di causa\/effetto legata al tab\u00f9 violato dello sguardo. Quando lo lessi, mi sembr\u00f2 la sceneggiatura gi\u00e0 pronta e perfetta per un grande film del terrore. Non sapevo allora che il regista Nicolas Roeg<\/strong> e gli screenwriter Allan Scott e Chris Bryant<\/strong> fossero gi\u00e0 al lavoro.<\/p>\n

La ricca produzione letteraria di Daphne du Maurier<\/strong> ha quasi per paradosso nutrito una cospicua produzione televisiva sulla quale non ci dilunghiamo (basti pensare che Rebecca<\/strong> \u00e8 stato ridotto per la TV almeno dieci volte), ma non \u00e8 altrettanto rappresentata per quantit\u00e0 sul grande schermo. E dire che ci sono molti racconti di questa stupenda scrittrice che potrebbero, nelle mani giuste, dar vita a film memorabili.<\/p>\n

Ecco la lista, francamente scarna, al di l\u00e0 dell’ottima qualit\u00e0 media dei prodotti:
\nLa taverna della Giamaica<\/strong> (Jamaica Inn) di Alfred Hitchcock<\/strong>, 1939; Rebecca, la prima moglie<\/strong> (Rebecca) di Alfred Hitchcock,<\/strong> 1940; L’avventura viene dal mare<\/strong> (Frenchman’s Creek) di Mitchell Leisen,<\/strong> 1944; The Years Between<\/strong> di Compton Bennett<\/strong>, 1946; Vendetta<\/strong> (Hungry Hill) di Brian Desmond Hurst<\/strong>, 1947; Mia cugina Rachele (<\/strong>My Cousin Rachel) di Henry Koster<\/strong>, 1952; Il capro espiatorio<\/strong> (The Scapegoat) di Robert Hamer,<\/strong> 1959; Gli uccelli<\/strong> (The Birds) di Alfred Hitchcock<\/strong>, 1963; A Venezia un dicembre rosso shocking<\/strong> (Don’t Look Now) di Nicolas Roeg<\/strong>, 1973; Oltre la morte<\/strong> (The Lifeforce Experiment – da The Breakthrought) di Piers Haggard<\/strong>, 1994.<\/p>\n

Restano da aggiungere per\u00f2 due chicche<\/strong>, una di stampo televisivo e l’altra radiofonica.
\nLa prima fa riferimento alla serie TV Danger<\/strong>, trasmessa dal 1950 al 1955 dalla CBS. L’ultimo episodio della quinta stagione, andato in onda il 31 maggio, era un cortometraggio di 25 minuti tratto da Gli uccelli,<\/strong> in parte solo raccontato ed evocato dalla voce dell’attore Dick Stark<\/strong> con l’ausilio delle musiche di Tony Mottola.<\/strong> L’adattamento radiofonico, fedelissimo al testo di partenza ambientato in Cornovaglia, \u00e8 stato trasmesso dalla BBC nel 2007.<\/p>\n

Non ci resta che aggiungere, a onor di cronaca, che la du Maurier<\/strong> non apprezz\u00f2 affatto l’ambientazione californiana de Gli uccelli<\/em> di Hitchcock.<\/strong> Ma neppure quest’ultimo apprezzava la suggestione della Cornovaglia e la rudezza primordiale della protagonista famiglia Hocken<\/strong>. Eppure due prodotti cos\u00ec dissimili \u2013 il racconto e il film \u2013 sono senza ombra di dubbio due assoluti capolavori.<\/p>\n
